Master Point FAQ - the Answers

What are Master Points ?

Clubs that are affiliated to the EBU have the right to award Master Points for their club nights - they are not obliged to do so, but many of them choose to. Once the evening's duplicate is scored, points are awarded to the top third of the field.

You can also win Master Points at EBU events, County events, and on licensed Bridge holidays, and additional points are awarded by the organisers of many of the Simultaneous Pairs that your club may take part in.
obout the top third of the players in a competition will be entitled to a certificate. Some competitions directly credit Master Points to the register. The register of Master Points is maintained at the offices of the the EBU. Only members of the EBU may register their points and have their records maintained.

The points are in the form of small certificates, indicating that you have won a certain number of Local or National points. Each certificate is valid for THREE years - if you want these points to count you must send them to us within three years of winning them. The more points you win the higher your Master Point Rank - a nationally recognised measure of your playing strength.

It won't take very long before you have a pile of Master Point certificates burning a hole in your pocket. If you want these points to count towards your Master Point ranking you need to "claim" them. You do this by registering them with Colin Porch, the EBU Master Point Secretary, who will count them and add them to our membership database. We will then send you a statement showing your current totals, your current rank, and (hopefully) congratulations on your promotion to a higher Master Point rank. Plase be careful when making a Master Point Claim and follow our simple instructions so that we can give you the best possible service!

Some of the points you win do not have to be claimed. These points are called "Direct Credits". You will win them if you play in EBU events, or in certain County events. With Direct Credits we do the "claim" for you, and automatically enter the points onto the database shortly after the event. You will be able to see details of all your direct credits the next time we send you a Master Point statement. You can also check your points on line through the website.
