Ivor Francis

I've been playing bridge for over 40 years but it’s only since I retired in 1998 that I’ve found the time to play more and get to grips with the teaching side. I'm a qualified director, and am also a qualified EBUTA (now EBTA) member. For several years I ran regular classes at three FE Colleges in Gloucestershire: GLOSCAT, Stroud College and Cirencester College. When my wife retired in late 2001 I gave that up as the regular commitments limited our freedom of action in retirement, and the colleges had become increasingly bureaucratic.

Instead, I now concentrate on small private classes at either my own home or a student’s home. I find four like minded students the ideal number to teach, as every student has my close individual attention, and we soon become friends rather than teacher and student. A class of eight is fine too - cheaper for the student - but less individual attention.

Another string to my bow is to run 5-day and weekend seminars at the beautiful Rothay Manor Hotel (015394 33605) at Ambleside in the Lake District. All seminars are geared towards the relatively experienced but not too successful club player. The atmosphere is competitive but very friendly.

So if you live in the Gloucestershire area and would like to begin or improve your bridge, ring me on mobile 0796 3861955 or email me and I’ll try to set something up for you. And if you’re interested in spectacular scenery, superb cuisine and accommodation and friendly bridge tuition and play, contact me or the Rothay Manor Hotel.
