Sarah O’Connor

Sarah first learnt to play bridge as a student at Latymer Upper School and has maintained an interest in schools’ bridge since.

She started pursuing her interest in the game more seriously at Cambridge University, where she studied Natural Sciences. After graduating, Sarah left Cambridge to qualify as a Chemistry teacher and, following a stint in Manchester, now works at a top London school, where running the growing student bridge club is a highlight of her week.

Sarah first represented England on the junior squad in the European Teams in Romania, 2009, and made many subsequent appearances for the u25 girls’ and u25 open sides. Most of her girls’ career was spent in partnership with Sinéad Bird; their proudest moment was coming 5th in the European Girls’ Pairs in Denmark, 2012, a performance that was repeated in 2014.

They were also lucky enough to represent the England women’s team in the Sportaccord World Mind Games in Beijing in 2013. Sarah now plays regularly with a variety of partners including Mike Bell and Anne Rosen, with whom she came second in the Womens' Trials this year.

In addition to practising regularly and working on her own game Sarah enjoys teaching new players and working with the juniors. She has acted as a mentor for number of developing girls’ players and was recently appointed leader of the newly-formed U15 squad, which she has great ambitions for.

When not playing bridge or working, Sarah pursues her passion for cookery and food, although she feels that people who ask her what “else” she does clearly have too many hours in their day.
