National Newcomers Pairs: 16 March 2008
Played in a local heat in relaxed conditions amongst other pairs you already know, this is a special competition run solely for players who have probably been playing for five years or less. It is scored across the country on the ECatsBridge web site just like a simultaneous pairs.
The list of heats and organisers contact details is on your right in the index. Alternatively why don’t you ask your local teacher/bridge club if they are holding a local heat? Organising a heat is easy, as you can see from these notes.
The first criteria for eligibility is to have earned less that 5000 local points in total, ie you will not have reached the rank of Master. To make the playing field level for every one, you must count all the points you’ve earned even if they have not been registered with the EBU. Don’t be put off if you think you are nowhere near earning 5,000 points, we have a special category for those of you with less than 1,000 points earned - that is, you will not yet have reached the rank of District Master.
The event consists of one session of about 26-28 boards, ideally with a tea break
At the end of the session you will receive a booklet of the hands with a commentary written (in 2007)by Paul Bower. Paul is the manager for the Under 25s squad. It goes without saying that he is a very experienced bridge player/teacher.
When the ranking list has been finalised, your local organiser will issue you with your master points. You do not have to be a member of the English Bridge Union to play in this event but if you win some points this may well be a good time to join.
