The Silver Plate is open to all English and Welsh teams knocked out in the 1st or 2nd round of the Gold Cup*. Every team entering the Gold Cup, with the exception of the exempted teams will be guaranteed at least two matches, e.g. two matches in the Gold Cup, or one Match in the Gold Cup and one match in the Silver Plate. Matches are of 32 boards except the final, which is of 48 boards.
* Scottish teams play in a separate 'plate' competition. The winner of this competition enters the Silver Plate at the quarter-final stage.

Level 5 agreements are permitted in this event.
Some clubs are available for hire by teams wishing to hold a knockout match at a 'halfway venue'. A list of some of these is available here.
