John Atthey, 18, is from Stroud in Gloucestershire, one of several players from that area coached by Andrew Kambites. He was a member of the England Schools team in the 2002 European Championships held in Torquay, playing with Ben Green, with whom he also won the 2002 and 2003 Peggy Bayer Trophy for England and the 2001 Channel Trophy. John was awarded the title of Young Player of the Year 2001. His current partner is Laura Macdougall, with whom he played in the 2002 Channel Trophy. The pair won the Under-19s Pairs Championship in 2003 and came third in the 2003 Under 20s trials, earning themselves a place in the 2004 Peggy Bayer team and, more recently, in the 2004 European Youth Championships.

John is doing a degree course in Exeter.
