Born in 1944, Chris trained as a lawyer but started playing bridge in the 1960s at the Grand Slam Bridge Club in London where Joe Amsbury was his early mentor. He formed a partnership with Robert Sheehan with whom he played in the European Championships in 1971 (Silver medal) and the Olympiad in 1972 (6th). He became a member of the British Precision Club team which included Jeremy Flint, Jonathan Cansino, Irving Rose, Terence Reese and Robert Sheehan. During this time he also recorded his first 2 Gold Cup wins as well as several Camrose Caps and National titles playing with various partners including Reese and Louis Tarlo.
In 1974 Chris became the owner and proprietor of the Acol Bridge Club in North London. By this time he was married to an international Italian player (Maria-Luce Faina) and had started a family.
In the mid 1970s, Chris was appointed the squad manager for the British Womens squad and he was the NPC for the Gold medal winning British womens team in 1979. Chris formed a partnership with Victor Silverstone which still endures today and with whom he won a European Title, the Gold Cup and many other national titles.
In 1986 he formed a computer software company which relocated to Bath and was sold in 2001. One of the directors of this company was British International Pat Davies who is another regular partner of Chris’s in County and national events.
Chris became a member, and ultimately chairman, of the EBU Selection
committee and was also an EBU board member. Although he remains a top
ranking player (last playing for England in 2001), he has recently been more
active in the role of NPC (Womens Team – European Championships 1991,
Open Team – European Championships 1999, Seniors Team – Olympiad
2004). He has also been the NPC and Trainer for England Under 25 Teams
(European Championships 2004, 2005 and 2007).
Chris, now retired, lives in Bath with his current non-bridge playing wife and his two youngest children.
He is a grandfather, a keen amateur musician and an intrepid world explorer with a particular interest in the Polar regions as witnessed by the picture here! He recently completed a spectacular double by playing bridge at the geographic South Pole and less than 3 months later in the middle of the Sahara Desert
