Ed Jones, known affectionately as “Guru” is 20 years old and from Leicestershire. He learnt bridge at the age of 11, and developed his game at Loughborough Grammar School, where he won most of the Schools competitions. Ed first represented England in 2004 in the Channel Trophy with Dave Rogers, winning it on home soil. He has subsequently represented England in two more Channel trophies, won the Peggy Bayer, and represented England Under 20s in the Carousel Cup in Amsterdam. In this last event his partnership was the best English one on the butler out of the both English teams there
Ed ‘s favourite phrase involves use of the words “shipping” as in “ship the imps this way lads”. This is something that has been accepted into general bridge usage by almost every Under 20 in the country, as well as some under 25s, although Ed didn’t actually invent it.
Aside from playing bridge Ed is a Maths student at Balliol College, Oxford. His ambition is to win the Portland Bowl, after a humiliating 1imp defeat to a team from another college earlier this year.
Ed is particularly proud of his double wins in the Under 19s pairs with Tom Dessain in 2005, and in the Under 25 pairs with Simon Cope in 2007, the first time it has been won by an under 20.
Many people cite their ambition as to win the Gold Cup - Ed's is rather more modest, he wishes to win a Gold Cup match - these entries into the Silver Plate are bad for Morale.
Ed has gone through a revolving door of partners, playing with Dave Rogers, Shivam Shah, Ben Paske, his latest victim is Rob Myers.
