Bridge is a sport, says preliminary ruling in European Court VAT case
15th June 2017 - A report prepared by Advocate General Maciej Szpunar at the European Court of Justice has concluded that, given the “considerable mental effort and training” which bridge required, it should be considered a sport for VAT purposes.
This is a non-binding recommendation, but if confirmed later this year the EBU would no longer need to charge VAT on entry fees to its competitions, and would receive a rebate on VAT which it had previously paid.

European Court to consider VAT exemption for bridge
28th February 2017 - On 2nd March, at the European Courts of Justice in Luxembourg, judges will consider the EU Directive under which sporting activities are exempt from VAT, after a referral from the British courts relating to its application to bridge competitions which are not currently exempt.

Great results for England at World Bridge Championships

1 February 2013 - International England bridge player John Holland has won the 2012 Sunday Telegraph Salver for most Master Points earned during the year. His score of 32,376 is well ahead of Steve Auchterlonie in second (25,719) and last year's winner Ed Scerri in third (24,114).
Lords v Commons Bridge Match

Charitable Status For English Bridge Club
1 March 2011 - The Charity Commission has recently made the ground-breaking decision to award charitable status to a bridge club in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. The Charity Commission stated that: “sport has often been used to advance charitable aims but, following a change in the law introduced by the Charities Act 2006, it is now charitable to advance amateur sports or games, which promote health by involving physical or mental skill or exertion.”

41st Brighton bridge summer meeting 2007
8 August 2007 - The 41st Brighton summer meeting is taking place this year from 10th August – 19th August at the Hilton Brighton Metropole.
