Online magazine help and FAQ

Current magazines

These are hosted by PageTiger and are available through My EBU on the EBU website.

How do I find one of the last six issues online?

Click on ‘My EBU’ at the top of the page, or go directly to https://www.ebu.co.uk/members. To enter, fill in your username (your EBU number) and password. If you don't remember your EBU number please email the membership department. If you can't remember your password please use the information on this page to reset your password. To reset your password we must have your email address on our records.

Once logged-in, the magazines can be found by clicking on 'magazine' in the top right corner. This provides a menu from which you can select the relevant magazine.

How do I change pages?

Clicking on the bottom right hand corner of the right-hand page will take you to the next page. Clicking in the left corner of the left page will take you to the previous page. You can also move through the pages by using the arrows in the centre of the top, black bar, beneath the address bar. You can also jump to a specific page by clicking on the number between the arrows, and entering the desired page in the box that appears. Also, you can click the ‘multiple squares’ icon in the top left of the screen, just below the address bar, to bring up a thumbnail overview of every page. From that overview you can click to jump to a specific page.

How do I change the size of the page?

The icons in the top left of the screen, just below the address bar, allow you to switch between ‘single page’ (the page showing a ‘1’) and ‘double page’ (the page showing a ‘2’) options. If you wish to zoom in, hover your arrow over the page, and a + symbol will appear. Then click and you will zoom in on the page, doubling its size.

Alternatively you can open the magazine as a pdf and use the features of your pdf reader (whether your web browser, adobe reader, or an 'app') to magnify the page. Click on the ‘spanner’ icon in the top right of the page, just below the address bar’. This will open a box which gives the option of downloading the magazine, or specific pages. Once you choose an option the magazine will then open as a standard pdf in your web browser and you can then download or save the magazine as you would with other pdfs. Or you can read it in your browser and choose the specific level of magnification you require.

How do I follow links within the magazine?

When each page opens all possible links are temporarily highlighted in blue. Thereafter, when you hover over a part of the page containing a link, the link will again be highlighted in blue. If you click on the link it will: open the relevant webpage in a new tab in your browser; or generate an email to that address; or jump to that page of the magazine.

How do I download the magazine?

Click on the ‘spanner’ icon in the top right of the page, just below the address bar’. This will open a box which gives the option of downloading the magazine, or specific pages. Once you choose an option the magazine will then open as a standard pdf in your web browser and you can then download or save the magazine as you would with other pdfs.

How do I print the magazine?

Click on the ‘spanner’ icon in the top right of the page, just below the address bar. This will open a box which gives the option of printing pages of the magazine. An alternative, which may be better depending on the setup of your printer, would be to download the magazine (or page) first – see above – open the pdf which downloads, and then print the relevant page as you would any other pdf.

How do I search for specific content?

If you wish to search within the magazine you are reading, click on the ‘spanner’ icon in the top right of the page, just below the address bar’. This will open a box which gives a search option for finding every page within that issue containing that information.

If you wish to search all copies of English Bridge which are in the public domain (currently from 2007 to April 2016) then the following Google search term will work:
site:view.pagetiger.com "english bridge" x
Then replace 'x' with whatever search you wish to perform. Examples:
• site:view.pagetiger.com "english bridge" stayman
• site:view.pagetiger.com "english bridge" "Michael Byrne"
• site:view.pagetiger.com "english bridge" "five card majors"

Please note that this will give instances where the word or phrase is used, and not just articles specifically relating to the topic. To search other publications (e.g. Contract Bridge Journal) please see below.

Archived magazines

Magazines older than one year are available at www.ebu.co.uk/englishbridge.

Magazines from 2007 to present

Currently, magazines published from 2007 onwards are hosted by PageTiger. For guidance on reading these please see the section above.

Magazines printed prior to 2007

When you link to these magazines they will open in your web browser in the same way as other pdfs. How you navigate and read the magazine will depend on the browser you are using.

The following websites will offer some help on using your chosen browser:

Google Chrome - https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/1060734?hl=en-GB
Mozilla Firefox - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/view-pdf-files-firefox-without-downloading-them
Safari (e.g. for iPads) - http://www.wikihow.com/Read-PDFs-on-an-iPad

Magazines hosted on the EBU website do not have any weblinks enabled so there is no advantage to reading them online. You may therefore choose to download them and read them offline.

If reading offline on a tablet then you can download an app which allows them to be read like an e-book, rather than dealing with them as though they were a document. There are numerous available; the Kindle app is easy to download and use, and is used and recommended by some of the EBU staff.

How do I search for specific content?

If you wish to search in copies of English Bridge from 1984 to 2006, in EBU Quarterly (1966 to 1984), in British Bridge World (1956-1961), or in Contract Bridge Journal (1946 to 1955), then the following Google search term will work:

site:http://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/ebumagazine/ "Z" "x"

Replace 'Z' with whichever publication you wish to search. Replace 'x' with the term for which you wish to search. Examples:
• site:http://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/ebumagazine/ "english bridge" "stayman"
• site:http://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/ebumagazine/ "contract bridge journal" "Terence Reese"
• site:http://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/ebumagazine/ "British Bridge World" "bermuda bowl"
• site:http://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/ebumagazine/ "ebu quarterly" "world bridge federation"

Please note that this will give instances where the word or phrase is used, and not just articles specifically relating to the topic. This search may not reveal all instances where the word/phrase is used, however, so you may also wish to search within specific pdfs (see below)

In some instances the search will only link to the magazine, and not the specific page. Once the pdf has opened you may be able to ask it to highlight specific instances where the word/phrase is used by pressing Ctrl+F, and using the internal search facility.

To search English Bridge from 2007 to 2016 please see the search instructions for PageTiger hosted magazines.

If you require any assistance when reading the magazines please contact us and we will try to help.
