The Hubert Phillips Plate - the consolation event for those knocked out of the early stages of the Hubert Phillips Bowl - has been won by the team of Derek Oram, Celia Oram (both Herts), Peter Lindon and Dee Lindon (both Berks & Bucks).
The competition is for mixed teams, and is played on the pivot principle so each player partners each of the team mates for a third of the match. Aggregate scoring is used.
Playing against Irene Robinson, Mike Huggins, Jeremy Rickard, Peter Shelley and Jack Terry (all Avon), the Oram team built up a huge lead of 3280 after 32 boards of the 48 board final. This was whittled down to 2560 after 40 boards, and then, with the Robinson playing aggressive and enterprising bridge, they almost snatched victory. The piled up 2390 points in the last eight boards, but it wasn't quite enough, and they missed out by a mere 170 points.
