The Junior Camrose began life in 1971 under the sponsorship of Cutty Sark whisky (in retrospect, an odd choice of sponsor). Like other such events it was organised by the BBL for the Home Unions though not all took part every year initially. The age limit for participation has come down over the years in stages, as it has done in all areas of the game, from under 35 to the current European and World standard of under 25.
The event has always been played on an all-play-all basis over a single weekend. The Republic of Ireland entered for the first time in 1999.
