University is a great place
to play bridge!
A number of universities have thriving
bridge clubs, but we would like to see more. Follow this link for details of individual university bridge club websites (and please let us know if your
club is not on the list).
So the EBU offers
help to set up and run university bridge clubs as follows:
Freshers Fairs
We can produce for you posters
to advertise your bridge club, and fliers to hand out to prospective
members at Freshers’ Fairs.
Subsidised teaching
We will pay for a teacher to come
to the university and give a course of lessons for beginners
for one term. That means that you can advertise beginners’
lessons as available when you set up your stall at Freshers’
Fairs.
Discounts from our Bridge Shop
We will give significant discounts
on a range of bridge stationery and equipment that you may need
to buy to run your club.
Youth Points
We will give you a free supply
of Youth Master Point certificates. These “Orange
Points” can be issued exactly as local points. When registered
with the EBU they are exchanged for ordinary Local Points at
the rate of three for one.
We also run a couple of competitions
especially for university students:
Universities Simultaneous Pairs
Held every November/December, you
have about one month to play the 20 boards that are part of
this competition. You will receive the hands, with commentaries
written by an international player, in October and need to send
the results in by Christmas. The entry fee is just £3 per university.
Dates can be found in the ECatsBridge Calendar and to enter you should email John Pain at the EBU for more information
The event is scored online, courtesy of ECatsBridge,
and results are available early each year. There are prizes
for those in the top positions and certificates for all heat
winners.
Portland Bowl
This is an inter-university teams-of-four
knock-out competition, which starts each autumn and runs through
to a semi-final and final hosted by the Portland Club in London
in the spring. Early matches are zoned to minimise travel.
