More than 50 students from around the country came to Warwick University over the weekend of the 11 th and 12 th February for the annual Universities' Congress. Saturday was the Swiss teams – congratulations to the winners: Michael Byrne, Dan McIntosh, Mark Lee and Mark Reeve. Saturday night was the usual fun and games with an excursion to the students' union, plus poker and bridge to all hours of the morning.
The Pairs on Sunday began with a few groggy heads, but got into full swing as players began vying for the prizes given out for various mis-awards, like going for 1100, and making the beer card – winning the last trick with ¨ 7 to make or beat the contract . The Pairs was scored over 2 sessions, and Alex Webb and James Ewington emerged with the winning score of 61.25%. Afterwards there was still time for a fun session of speedball, with some bidding of the type that only a group of university students can produce!
The event was heartily enjoyed by everyone, and we are all very much looking forward to next year's festival. A very warm word of thanks must go to some people who went out of their way to help this year, namely Mark Reeve, Matthew Haag, Mark Lee, and my fellow Warwick members. Also, a big thank you to John Pain at EBU headquarters and Coventry Bridge Club for their support.
See you next year!
