I had my first Bridge lesson on 29th September 2014, gained my first Masterpoints in March 2015 and have played regularly ever since. My Bridge claim to fame was a year later in March 2016 when, playing with my mother, we came 21st in the Easter Festival Swiss Pairs. There was a deal of luck, but my bridge teacher was impressed!

I am one of the newer members of the EBU panel of Tournament Directors, being appointed to congress B rank in early 2021. I first learned to play bridge in school, following in the footsteps of my older brother Martin, and honed my skills playing for Warwick University in the Coventry league. On leaving University in 2001 I moved back to York and joined the bridge club there, where I am still based.

When the Lockdown was introduced back in March I fully presumed (perhaps naively) that by now clubs would have re-opened. Sadly that is not the case, social distancing requirements mean that almost all clubs remain shut. We fully appreciate that clubs are keen to re-open and the EBU continues to review the latest government guidance and to advise clubs accordingly. The latest information can be found here based on a response from our insurers.

Welcome to the Autumn edition of Club Management Focus 2020.
During these very difficult times it is fantastic to see so many people continuing to play bridge, albeit online. The EBU games on Bridge Base Online (BBO), the Lockdown League and club games on BBO and BCL are all thriving.
More Help with TD Rulings - Video Series
The Laws of Duplicate Bridge were updated by the World Bridge Federation in 2017. This has affected a number of the videos in our original series How Can I Help You and so we have produced a new range of updated videos in conjunction with the EBL and the WBF.
There are seven videos in this new series:

I started playing bridge with my girl friends at the age of 40, pregnant with my fifth child. I waited until the end of my bridge lesson with Glyn Liggins to head straight to the hospital to give birth.
In 2014, after playing with Nick Sandqvist, one of the greatest players ever (... he might have helped me write this bit) in a charity event, we became friends and then bridge partners and have gone on to win (and not win...) a handful of national events.
