I first encountered bridge in the school sixth form, where I was lucky to get an excellent introduction to the game from my French teacher. I was also lucky that this happened in Wales, where there weren’t many young players competing, meaning that four of us from Haverfordwest Grammar School were fast-tracked to represent the country at Junior Camrose level.
The Pairs Player of the Year Award replaces the previous Player of the Year Championship. It is intended to give a realistic chance of winning to a wide range of members, while still providing a strong ranking.
The award includes all EBU national face-to-face pairs events that have no entry restrictions – ie not NGS-limited, not county-representative, not master-point restricted, not events that require qualification via advance heats.
I started off as a chess player, playing bridge at home and then at local clubs. However the university bridge club was both strong and supportive, and gradually bridge took over. I have played semi-regularly for 40 years, although never at a very high level – the highlight of my career so far has been winning the Premier Life/Life Masters Pairs in 2023.
Away from the bridge table I now design, develop and support computer software. I am also a keen 'parkrunner' and sing in a choir. I joined the Selection Committee in January 2025.
Below is your monthly update from the EBU. All previous updates are available on the EBU Updates page.
