Commitment: This is a permanent and full-time role (but we will consider applicants who wish to work 4 days per week)

About the English Bridge Union (EBU):
The English Bridge Union is the national organisation responsible for promoting the game of bridge throughout England. With a rich history and a dynamic membership, we are committed to growing bridge participation, supporting players of all levels, and increasing public awareness of the game. We are seeking a creative and strategic County & Membership Development Officer to lead, develop and implement our membership drive.
Appointment Objective
The objective of this new role, which complements existing staff, is to promote the game of bridge in England as an inclusive Mind Sport, working with and through our bridge clubs and County Associations, and specifically to help grow our active membership from 40,000 to 42,000 in 2025 and to promote further growth thereafter.
Role
We are aiming to:
- Increase the number of members of the English Bridge Union
- Increase the number of players playing regularly, especially in EBU recorded Sessions
- Develop the “face” of the EBU at club and county level
- Promote the benefits of EBU membership to clubs and current players (whether EBU members or not)
- Increase the number of affiliated clubs
- Support teachers in the transition of students from classroom to clubroom
The post will encompass:
- A mentorship role for our Clubs and Counties to develop their presence and promote bridge within their communities (this will require attendance at County Chairs Meetings)
- A Sales/promotional role to engage with non-affiliated clubs to promote the benefits of EBU affiliation (working with the Marketing Committee and the Editorial Committee)
- A Sales/promotional role to engage with players playing bridge in affiliated clubs and in our national events (working with the Competitions Committee)
The Objectives will be achieved by a number of routes, to include:
- Proactively reaching out to all clubs through County Associations initially
- Building a rapport with County Officers and Club Management teams by personal visits
- Providing ideas and pathways for transition from classroom to clubroom in a mentorship role
- Working with the marketing and editorial teams to promote counties, clubs and bridge in general to the wider public
- Working with the social media team to develop new ways of promoting the game at different levels
- Working with the technical team so that clubs are better able to access the EBU documents provided to support them
- Running and developing workshops for counties, clubs, teachers and members
- Attending key congresses and events as a face of the EBU for the members
- Delivering the culture and values championed in the 2025 EBU Mission and Visions statement
- Collaborating with the Communications Officer to ensure “messages” and communication strategies are aligned
Time Commitment
There is flexibility in how the objectives can be achieved but the role is envisaged as a minimum of 4 day per week to include travel to meet County Officers and club management teams face-to-face. The role will be based at Aylesbury.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Someone who enjoys the game of bridge
- An understanding of running a membership organisation
- Sales, Promotion and Marketing experience
- Experience in a public facing role
- Excellent communication and people skills
- A strong team-centric and collaborative approach
Remuneration
The salary will be in the range £30,000 - £40,000 (pro rata to the agreed time commitment), and will reflect the successful applicant’s experience. There is also a travel allowance for county and club visits and there is a workplace pension scheme.
