For many years, Allan was a stalwart supporter of Richmond Bridge Club, and also of the Ravenna and New Malden Bridge Clubs, and could truly be described as a real gentleman, never uttering a word in anger or being discourteous to or about other players.
He received the Dimmie Fleming Award in 1993 for services to Surrey bridge. He was Surrey CBA’s President in 1992, and also served as its Treasurer for many years.
Allan had the most incredible ability to add numbers speedily and accurately, and this either led to, or followed on from his chosen profession as bank manager for Barclays Bank. After taking early retirement, he continued working privately right up to his final illness, but his prowess with figures was undiminished.
He was a really nice man through and through and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
