James Carpenter

I am one of the newer members of the EBU panel of Tournament Directors, being appointed to congress B rank in early 2021. I first learned to play bridge in school, following in the footsteps of my older brother Martin, and honed my skills playing for Warwick University in the Coventry league. On leaving University in 2001 I moved back to York and joined the bridge club there, where I am still based.

An interest in the mathematics (my degree subject) of bridge movements and aptitude for IT led me to become increasingly involved in the running of games at York Bridge Club, where I remain a senior director. In 2018 I passed the county TD course and have since been an active member of the YCBA events team, frequently helping to run the many Yorkshire congresses. At the start of lockdown I became involved in online bridge, helping to run EBU games and events on BBO and  RealBridge. I continue to direct online events, mainly for the Oliver Cowan bridge club.
