I've been playing bridge for fifty-five years and have won a few major events during that time including Crockfords, Two Stars Pairs, Tollemache and come close in some others including the Spring Fours. Internationally, our seniors team finished 8th in the European Championship in 2018, which was just enough for us to qualify for the Seniors World Championship, the D'Orsi Bowl, which was held in Wuhan the following year. Our team played well and won the silver medal. Unfortunately, I also returned home with Covid 19, though fortunately I fully recovered.
In 2024, my partner David Kendrick who sadly is no longer with us, and I qualified for the Teltscher Trophy played in Stirling, Scotland. The Scottish team were strong and were playing at home so were favourites. And so it proved as they were leading the way. England had to play Scotland in the final match and needed to win by 23 imps to overtake them on VPs. At half time, teammates had us 5 imps up so we needed a further 18 imps in the second half. It was all very close but a swing of 5 imps by our other pair on the very last board of the match was just sufficient for us to pip the Scots to the Trophy. No doubt this was one of the closest Teltscher Trophy tournaments on record. Who knows.
Away from bridge, I live on the Devon / Somerset border close to the Blackdown Hills.
