On Wednesday 21st August, Cheddar Bridge Club celebrated its Golden Jubilee. Below, Secretary Geoff Davies recounts the day:
If truth be told, we should probably have celebrated our Golden Jubilee much earlier. As far as early members recollect, some of whom are shown below (Sue Spink, Barbara Biggin, Sue Gudgeon & Malcolm Scard), the club was established before 1971. It was only when Steve mentioned that Wedmore was coming up to its 50th anniversary that it occurred to me to wonder when Cheddar started!
The event took the form of an afternoon of duplicate bridge followed by high tea. The tea table was in the centre of the room with bridge tables around the outside. For the high tea the bridge tables were added as T-pieces at the ends of the long central table seen below to make an informal social layout.
Thirty six members attended with Barbara Biggin & Anne Skinner winning N/S and Carole Shuff & Ray Beach winning E/W. It was good to see Carole, one of our newer members, in the winners enclosure.
Cheddar Bridge Club has recently joined with Wedmore Bridge Club to become Cheddar and Wedmore Bridge Club. We will also be having a Wedmore Golden Jubilee shortly!
You can read more about the history of the club on their website: Origins of Cheddar Bridge Club.
