Crete Congress: Meg Jones Blog

The Cretan Congress

Here in Crete having lazy mornings, in the sun, by the pool reading my books and swimming. Followed by a Greek tapas lunch and then off to have fun playing bridge.

Friday saw us on a day long trip to the Knossos Place and fabulous tour round the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

After the coach ride home, we were all a little tired as we went into play the Pivot teams. A fun event which throws up some interesting pairings. So maybe these factors contributed to the way this hand was bid.

Board 24: Dealer West: Love all I suspect the usual opening is 1 but with untried pairings they may not then be able to Auto splinter and get to 4. It then seems obvious for N/S to playing in the 4 contract. At my table they opened 4 doubled by North. South bidding 4 and West ending up in 5X. Our teammates found the creative opening bid of 2 which must have confused North with their 19HCP – however they were allowed to play in their making 4 contract. This gained us 11 Imps.

As a young director this is an interesting hand: here 2C is not a legal opening as it does not comply with the interpretation of “Strong opening bids”.

16HCP or 13+HCP in 10 cards in 2 suits.

Meg Jones.
