The Congress started today, with a pairs event – the pre-Congress Pairs – for which our guests were joined by four players from the Madeiran federation, both of whom finished in the upper half of the field.
Many of the guests had arrived two or three days earlier, so that they could enjoy some of the experiences Madeira has to offer. Indeed, one group of four hired a car to explore the east side and mountainous interior of the island.
Others took a short bus ride into Funchal town, with its many bars, restaurants and tourist opportunities, among which is the chance to visit Blandy’s, take a tour and sample Their Madeiran wine. Another group hired a taxi for the day to explore the east and centre of the island, whilst yet others visited Monte, with its famous toboggan ride, or the botanical gardens. So there’s lots to do on the island, particularly around Funchal.
At breakfast this morning, we noticed a falconer with a Harris Hawk who is employed by the hotel to discourage the flocks of pigeons which infest the island – and it works.
The Pre-Congress Pairs was won by Judy and John Brearley, a clear top ahead of Kathy and Dennis Talbot, while Gordon Clark and Claire Price led the B category pairs.
Board 17 was interesting, as East you hold, with high expectations of a black suit slam. Unfortunately, partner has a flat 3-count, including four clubs to the 10 and a small doubleton in spades; as well, the Spade King is offside, so 11 tricks is all you can take.
