Seventy-five years is no small feat, and Halifax Bridge Club made sure their big anniversary was marked in unforgettable style—with cards, creativity, cake, and even a little Elvis thrown in for good measure.
The celebrations began with a fun and friendly logo design competition. Members let their artistic sides shine, and the winning design became the official emblem of the 75th anniversary. It soon popped up on polo shirts and sweatshirts worn proudly by members—walking souvenirs of the club’s special year.
Then came the main event: a 75-board bridge marathon. One determined member took on the task of organising this all-day affair. It kicked off with 25 boards in the morning, played with randomly assigned partners to keep things fresh and full of surprises. Prizes were awarded, laughter was shared, and the bridge was as competitive as it was entertaining.
In the afternoon, the next 25 boards got underway, and spirits were lifted even higher with a visit from the Mayor of Calderdale. She took the time to chat with members and soak up the friendly, focused atmosphere.
By the evening, players pushed on to complete the final 25 boards—a true test of bridge stamina! It was a long day, but one that perfectly reflected the dedication and enthusiasm that’s kept the club thriving for three-quarters of a century.
For those who couldn’t join in person, another inventive member organised an online game, complete with a charming personalised trophy for the winners. That prize found its way to Essex, where a lucky couple claimed top honours—proof that Halifax’s bridge spirit reaches far beyond Yorkshire.
And of course, no celebration would be complete without a party. More than a hundred guests gathered for a dinner event featuring an Elvis tribute cabaret. The King himself would have been impressed as hips shook and toes tapped well into the night.
Here’s to Halifax Bridge Club—75 years young, and still playing with heart.
