Hexham Bridge Club celebrated its 50th anniversary by holding a dinner at The Great Hall, Hexham Abbey. 56 people attended the dinner including the Chair of the North East Bridge Association, Marion Curran, a number of former members and 7 students from our current bridge class.

Following an excellent meal, everybody adjourned for an enjoyable game of bridge, scored on a handicap basis so that everybody had an equal chance of winning. This worked extremely well with the winners being two of our current students, Paul Ross and Christine Turner and two former students Moira Humble and Diana Mulholland.

Teaching people to play bridge has become an extremely important to our club. In 2016, it was recognised that numbers were falling and the average age of our members was increasing. Three members (Senga Bond, Ann Rooke and Jennifer Messenger) felt that something had to be done to reverse these trends and suggested that they should start teaching bridge. This had the support of the club and over the past nine years, more than 200 students have been taught to play the game. Many of these have progressed to our weekly club session on a Thursday evening at Hexham Community Centre. The classes have been so successful that over this period, membership has grown from 60 to nearly 100.
