Worthing Bridge Club held its 50th Anniversary on Sunday 29th June when 50 years ago it became a members club. Prior to this, bridge had been played in our 1884 building from the early 1930’s. In those days bridge was offered with full board for 3guineas as the house next door was a hotel owned by bridge players.
The war broke the relaxed lifestyle of those times and then in the sixties the club was sold to Derek Boreham, following which he offered the premises to the members in the mid 1970’s. We had some well known members such as Tommy Ricardo a Welsh international and Margaret and Freddie North, the latter author and England player.
For our anniversary party, we had a full house of 16 tables and everyone had an enjoyable day. A buffet was supplied by members and an Anniversary cake was available. We only have five surviving members from that time of which only the chairman Ernie Rivett was able to attend.
The two attached photos show the cake and buffet and Ernie Rivett (left) and David Hughes (President) looking forward to the relaxed bridge and the buffet.
