The Club held a party to celebrate its 70th Anniversary on 10th September 2025.
The club started from humble beginnings in 1955 with a group of friends meeting in a local pub, and making the boards out of cardboard. One of the founder members, Nellie Simpson, started the club with her husband Bert, (see the Trophy information below.) The club members were asked to join with a bridge club run at Sankeys Social Club and this venue continued until Sankeys closed its social club. Wrekin moved to several different venues until it settled at its present venue some 30 years ago. Wrekin is a small, friendly club which welcomes new members. It meets on Wednesday evenings at 7.00 pm at Shawbirch Community Centre. Visitors are welcome, and partners found.
A few months ago, a former member came to the club with 2 trophies that he had found in his garage, which related to past trophies that had been played for at Wrekin. The first one was the Frank Ellis Trophy (pairs competition), presented in October 1988, and the second trophy was the Simpson Trophy Teams of 4, presented in 1994. On looking at the names on the trophies, five of our current members had won these trophies during the times from 1998 – 2003. These players are pictured above from Left to Right: Mike Cornes, Margaret Tomkinson, Tony Leech, Pam Booth-Jones and Jeff Jones.
What was even more interesting was that Sarah Forster, the daughter of one of the original winners of the Frank Ellis Trophy in 1988, Pauline Tinsley, joined Wrekin Bridge Club in 2024. Now that’s history for you.
