EBU Event Focus
Issue 62: October 2017

Dear EBU member

2017 seems to have passed by in a flash, and there aren't many more congresses left this year - in fact this newsletter already looks ahead to 2018, which kicks off with the exciting, and different, National Point-a-Board teams. So don't miss out on your last chances to play this year, and start planning your trips, and making your entries, now.

As always, if you have any queries about any of the events featured here then please don't hesitate to contact the Competitions Department on 01296 317203/219 or at comps@ebu.co.uk. Entries can be made by calling this number, or through My EBU, the members area of the website - www.ebu.co.uk/members.

Autumn Congress - thank you for your cooperation
Thank you to all of you who played on Friday at the Autumn Congress and made possible the change of location which was forced upon us by the venue at the 11th hour. We are confident that this will be a one-off. We are pleased to say that entries were 40% higher than when the event was held in Peterborough, so the change of venue seems to have been beneficial, even if the first afternoon didn't quite go to as planned.

Online Knockout Teams
Entries for this year's Online Knockout Teams are now open. Exactly as it sounds, this is a knockout teams competition, with the matches played online. See here for more details.

Junior Camrose - volunteers wanted
On 16th - 18th February we will be hosting the annual Junior Camrose and Peggy Bayer competitions in Coventry. We will need volunteers for a variety of tasks, and any offers to help would be greatly appreciated. Please email dawn@ebu.co.uk and let us know.

Player of the Year Competition
The 2017/18 Player of the Competition is underway, with points having been scored in two events. It is being led by the team of  Derek Patterson, Willie Whittaker, Andrew Black, Gunnar Hallberg, Phil King and Andrew McIntosh following their win in the Gold Cup.
The full list of points scorers is available here.
Another chance to score points will be at the National Point-a-Board Teams - see below for details.

Seniors Congress
3rd - 5th November, Reading

A congress for those born in, or before, 1957*

Friday - Saturday: A Championship Pairs.
Saturday: One day Swiss Pairs
Sunday: Swiss Teams

The Swiss Pairs Competition is open to pairs eliminated from the Championship Pairs at the end of Friday evening, and to players joining the congress on Saturday.

Accommodation packages are available at the venue, and should be booked through Bridge Overseas (0800 0346 246).

* - The WBF - and consequently the EBL and Bridge Great Britain - have adjusted their criteria for eligibility for Seniors events, and this will come in to effect in 2018. As this was done at short notice the EBU will not be making any changes to the criteria for entry to its senior congresses until 2019 (trial events will be changed in 2018).

National Point-a-Board Teams
20th - 21st January, London

Held at the Young Chelsea Bridge Club, this competition is played eclusively on the point-a-board (BAM) format - a great opportunity to play with this fascinating and skilful, but rare, form of scoring.

The event was full last year so don't wait too long to enter this year.

There will be a qualifying multiple-teams event on Saturday, and on Sunday there will be a main final for the top teams with longer head-to-head matches, and a consolation final for non-qualifiers.

Master Points will be awarded at a 50% enhanced rate for matches won in the qualifier and main final, and points can be earned towards the Player of the Year Championship.
