EBU Event Focus
Issue 48: September 2016

Dear EBU member

As summer turns to autumn it's time to look ahead and plan your bridge calendar for the rest of the year. But we're also looking back at the Summer Meeting. Ian Payn has written below on behalf of the Tournament Committee as they are looking for feedback to help improve the 2017 event. Please send any feedback to peter.stockdale@ebu.co.uk and it will be passed on to Ian.
As always, if you have any questions about any of the competitions please contact the Competitions Department on 01296 317203/219 or at comps@ebu.co.uk. Entries can be made by calling this number, or through the members area of the website - www.ebu.co.uk/members.
Summer Meeting 2016 - Feedback wanted

Well the first Summer Congress at Eastbourne has come and gone, and I think we can regard it as a success. Most people seemed to like the venue, and Eastbourne was a lot more user-friendly in terms of hotels, restaurants and cafés than a lot of us expected. True, there were issues – well, one main issue, really, and that was the unusually hot weather exposing the inadequacy of the air-conditioning (or, more accurately, the non-existence of it). Other than that, the venue was very good, and I have personally received no complaints.

I would still like, however, to hear what you thought about it.
1. Did you like the venue?
2. Did you like the town?
3. Did you find the local amenities to your liking?
4. There is a modest call for timings to use continental-style timing, i.e. start late morning, have a shortish break, finish at eight-ish and then plenty of time to relax at leisure. How does that sound to you? Good? Indifferent? Abhorrent?
5. Did you play roughly the right amount of bridge?
6. If you didn’t go, why not? If I don’t know, I can’t address it for you.

There’s a Tournament Committee meeting towards the end of September, and we will be discussing Eastbourne feedback (at some length would be my guess). Now’s your chance to say your piece, and to have your voice heard.

E-Mail peter.stockdale@ebu.co.uk and he will make sure everything is passed on to me and the Tournament Committee.

Ian Payn
Chairman, Tournament Committee

Summer Meeting 2017 - Confirmation of new date

Due to the Eastbourne Air Show changing its dates for 2017 - a change which was only announced last month - it has been necessary to change the dates of the 2017 Summer Meeting. These are now confirmed as 4th - 13th August, and not 18th - 27th as previously advertised.

It is likely that the dates of the Northern Midweek Congress may also change as a result of this.

We apologise for any inconvenience or disappointment caused, however we believe this to be the best course of action for the majority of the members, and hope that it may in fact result in an increase in attendance as it will no longer fall on the Bank Holiday weekend.

Great Northern Swiss Pairs
1st - 2nd October, Leeds

A Green Pointed, twelve round, Swiss Pairs weekend

With seven 7-board matches on Saturday, and five more on Sunday, this is a full weekend of Swiss Pairs. Green points are awarded for each match won, with bonus awards based on the stratified results.

There is also an improvers pairs on Sunday afternoon, so please encourage your less experienced friends or family to take part.

The schedule allows time for enjoying the sights of Leeds, or just for travel before and after the event. The cost of entry includes meals on Saturday evening and Sunday lunchtime.

The event is organised by Yorkshire CBA on behalf of the EBU. To enter please contact Stuart Davies, stuart@svd1.uk, 01274 598408. Further information is available here.

The event takes place at the Hilton Leeds City.

Tariff and booking information is available on the YCBA website.

There are just a few days left to enter the Crockfords Cup this year: the closing date for entries is 8th September.

The event is played as a knockout in the early stage, prior to an 'all-play-all' final between the final eight teams.

A Plate competition is open to all unseeded teams who are defeated in their first match.

Entries for trials open now

Applications are invited to take part in the trials to represent England in the 2017 Teltscher Trophy. They will take place at the West Midlands Bridge Club, 16th - 18th December.

Please send applications to dawn@ebu.co.uk by 31st October.

Autumn Congress
14th - 16th October, Peterborough

A three day congress with events for all levels of experience

The congress includes the prestigious Two Star Pairs. The qualifier for this will take place on Friday using a Swiss Pairs format, but with short matches and matchpoint scoring. The top twenty pairs will qualify for the Two Stars Pairs, the next twenty for the Satellite pairs, with these finals taking place on Saturday. Anyone wishing to play only on the Friday may do so.

Those who don’t qualify for the main finals will play in a more traditional style of Swiss Pairs on the Saturday, with 9 x 6 board matches scored by VPs. This Swiss Pairs is also open to those playing only on the Saturday.

Green Points are awarded for matches won at all stages of the Pairs events.

The Two Star Pairs is part of the Championship Series, in which points can be earned towards the Player of the Year Championship.

We also have our 2-session multiple teams event on the Sunday for the Eastbourne Bowl (Premier) and the Burlington Cup (Secondary). All non-qualifiers play in the Sussex Cup.

For more information please visit the event webpage.

with the competition scored across all venues.

The event at each venue is open to all - EBU members and non-members alike. Please pass this information on to any friends or family who may be interested.

Entries closing soon

There is just over a week to enter the NICKO this year: the closing date for entries is 15th September.

The NICKO is open to all EBU affiliated bridge clubs, and is very popular with over 250 teams entering annually. It is played as a knockout throughout, with the draw regionalised to reduce travelling.

Each club can enter an unlimited number of teams, so why not team up with your clubmates and take part?!

Entry forms can be download from our website. Entries should be submitted by the affiliated Club Secretary, who should be satisfied of the credentials of the players.

Details of the qualification requirements are available on the event webpage, but please be aware that all participants must be members of the club they represent, should have been so for three months prior to the closing date for entries, and be listed on the club's membership list held by the EBU. Please assist your club in complying with the regulations by ensuring you have paid your membership, and checking that it has been registered with the EBU.

We hope you will take part.

No event in 2017

We hope you saw the note last month advising that due to declining entries in the past this event has been cancelled for 2017.

We are sorry for any disappointment this causes, and hope that those who enjoy midweek bridge will  support the 2017 Northern Midweek Congress.

If you want to find a partner, or team mates, for an EBU congress try the message boards which are on the webpages of each congress. Scroll to the foot of the page, and you will find the board.

You can either leave a message to say you are looking, or reply to someone else who is seeking a partner or team mates.

They are hopefully straightforward to use, but see here if you need any help.
