Split Board - only played twice in each split.

The small risk of snow having put off a number of players, we had only 5 1/2 tables this afternoon.

It transpires after the event that the North and West hands on a board were swapped part way through.

Leaving aside issues of penalties for misboarding etc, the board was only played twice in each configuration. Is that enough to allow the split results to stand? Two plays would not be enough for a normal event, and it seems that giving everyone either 100% or 0% seems wrong.

  • In a fouled board sub-field, nobody gets 100% or 0% - that is not how "Neuberg" works.

The White Book small subfield formula (4.2.3.3) does not apply because the number of results in each subfield is more than 1/3 of the expected results.

Assuming a top is 8 (some boards get played 5 times), then the match points for the two (different) results in sub-field are 6.5 and 1.5. If a top is only 6 (all boards played at most 4 times), the match points in the sub-field are 5 and 1.

EBUScore Pairs will get this right (using F to mark the fouled results), including not-using the small subfield formula,

The small risk of snow ...

The bridge club is not very far away from an organisation with an interest in these things. The risk of snow was 95% (only because the Met Office don't do 100%), it was snowing at 5pm, and the major roads out of Exeter to North and South-West were stationary by early evening.

I cycled there and back, and while it was snowing lightly at 4:15 (when the event finished) it wasn't settling. My partner eve came from Teignbridge!
