Thank you for all of the comments. I certainly wouldn’t have been brave enough to challenge during the round (a number of pairs do ask upfront if they’re happy to do the checks after the round so it would be difficult for a TD to know whether or not…

The scenario was intended where a bid has been made by South that is non-sensical (i.e. they thought they were bidding the opponent's suit, i.e. hearts, such that the intention was Michael's, but here they made an insufficient bid of the wrong su…

I would have thought this is something that should be reviewed the next time the Laws are looked at. It feels like it is just inviting this sort of discussion:
Table so far: West has opened 1C, North passes, East 1H, South 1D. Director call… -
I find that this document is very helpful - https://www.bridgewebs.com/obc/OBC Scoring - What can go wrong 2018-01-30.pdf. I'…

This sounds like a question for BBO - BBO has its own forum as well as hosts that would be best suited to reply.

On your first point, the key is that the CoC is clear either way, in which case you're not going to have many issues. The 'fairest' (and most accepted) way would be to recalculate handicaps each month (assuming that, as you say, no-one tries to g…

Although I didn't start the thread, thanks for all the very constructive replies - it shows how inadequate my understanding of the rules were!

BBO should have awarded Av= automatically and your final results don't need adjusting (both sides are deemed to get 0 IMPs on the board). If anything, if one side lost connection, strict applications of the rules would suggest that they should ge…

1NT is a subset because it shows a balanced hand (hence including 2+ clubs) and 15-18 (hence a subset of an opening hand.
2C as a natural overcall is also fine in my view, because it shows values close to opening values (unless partnershi…

If you're using a Virtual Club account, a BBO Howell would allow 10 rounds without playing a pair twice, although I don't know how fair the BBO Howells are compared to standard EBU movements.

Also, as per https://www.ebu.co.uk/newsletters/Summer-2021, a proposed change to the masterpoint rules restricts the number of events that counties can hold online (master…

I too was planning to go to the f2f YE, and I know many saw that as the leapfrog back into f2f congress events. There's no doubt in my mind that online events will remain popular, and perhaps just as well attended, going forward while cutting cos…

There is no overriding regulation about what club directors should or should not do, and most clubs have an existing policy. In its absence, the laws would say that there is no adjustment to be made (effectively the player failed to update the su…

What specifically does BCL have in mind? As far as I'm aware, the only way of running hybrid sessions (using real cards at least) is to have two sections playing the same hands, which is available on all bridge platforms by inputting a pbn file.<…

On the note of vaccinations, some clubs may have members who are exempt or currently not eligible for vaccination. I am very much in favour of clubs reopening on a trial basis with a vaccination requirement, but clubs with junior members (not the…

Having seen this article - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-57240510 - I wonder whether the advice has changed in a similar fashion for co…

I think Stamford and Nottingham are running pairs/teams events with a lower maximum capacity and with no movement so that they are comfortably within the rule of six.
The other three clubs appear to have a lower maximum capacity too but w…

As per the Skyblue Book, the player (here the sub-in director) is graded based on all 20 boards, not just the ones he played. However, the TD does have the option to exempt himself from grading in the normal fashion, and in my view his partner co…

I would have thought that depends on the context. Some clubs have psyche books and some do not, and I imagine some clubs go further and keep a record of director calls that reach an appeal (or similar) stage, like the EBU does. If this same pair …

Swiss is good in that it has fewer opponents, but it means everyone moving about which I suspect is worse. You can get Mitchell Swiss movements where all NS are stationary, but even then EW pairs will be overtaking one another.
As for cor…

It's obviously hard to know what rules are likely to be in place, but the expectation is that some social distancing will remain in force. Therefore, if you want to plan ahead of time, the events most likely to run successfully are those with min…

If your question is why the masterpoints are distributed in this fashion (and have been for decades), then that's more up for debate of course. The American system gives a far larger proportion of masterpoints to the winners for instance.
It is not explicitly stated but I think it's pretty transparent what's going on? 4.1.6 gives a bit of a clarification on this. I use club scale in my illustrations below.
For 12-17 board events, the top 1/4 receive awards.
For 1-w…
Ah unless you were referring simply to the gaps in the table? Masterpoint awards go to the top quarter (12-17 boards), top third (18-35) and top half (36+) of the field, rounded up and excluding half tables.
I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to... the maximum values are based on Section 4.4 primarily which does include an algorithm.
On that note, the handbook is very unclear on when the maximum value algorithm should be used. 4.4.3 …
Fair enough, I know they've already got a long list of features to add!
Thinking ahead to events like the Virtual Seaside congress, it would also be useful to be able to add pairs I imagine? Last year, at the Year End(?), I recall the EBU…
I think you've covered all of the best ideas assuming that you can get in a human substitute.
That option aside, it is possible to run a makeshift triangle on RealBridge with each pair in the triangle playing 3 out of the 7 boards. Obviou…
