I don't think that's a fair comparison, for the reasons I've outlined above. The old midweek KO wouldn't appeal to anyone who -
- didn't want to stay for five days.
- had no interest in the evening (single-session, pa…

Dropping out of Swiss events is common in the States - pairs who feel they can't do well any more cut their losses and either take the rest of the session off or find another event to play in. I suspect that "non-qualifying drop-ins" would be mor…

Hey Peter, thanks for the positive feedback. Interesting idea - if not starting a new event on the first Sunday evening, it would probably be better to have the Four Stars the first weekend and the Harold Poster the second weekend.

A shame to lose a match out of the qualifying for the Four Stars final, but the earlier finish/shorter day combines well with having a proper third session in the evening.

Gordon suggested elsewhere replacing the speedballs with proper Fast Pairs events, I think that's a good idea. As ever, it's probably best to start small before scaling up (to a full day's play).

Unfortunately, much of the "attractive experience" of an event held in a French coastal resort isn't replicable in the UK! 26-30 boards per day is reasonable there; it wouldn't be here.
Agree that many of the French events seem…

Scoring and format are largely separate issues. I suggest keeping one a "known quantity" as far as possible, i.e. any new Patton event should be a one-day swiss in the first instance, and any experimental formats should be IMPed teams …

It would translate brilliantly to a longer event too - e.g. three days (BH weekend) -
- Saturday: six groups, seeded by NGS, with two to qualify from each.
- Sunday: Ro12 (24 boards) and Ro6 (32 boards).
- Monday: SF/fina…

I like that idea for R1. Besides anything else, it balances the draw a bit compared with just having head-to-heads and triangles, and you can extend R1 a bit to allow more than 48b on the Saturday and to avoid splitting teams off so quickly - e.g…

While I'm sure I would find a well-attended Bracketed Teams enjoyable, it's more about what those who wouldn't be in the top bracket think - would they rather have the opportunity to play against the top teams, or to start in an event they have a…

The Kent event appears to have been bracketed round-robins rather than bracketed KOs - very different IMO. Not that I'm convinced that bracketed KOs would be successful, but the whole idea is that if it's not gone well so far you enter a fresh ev…

Don't think I've ever been aware of any bracketed teams events outside of the US, when was this tried, Gordon? Thanks.

By the way, I think a Summer Fours is a great idea, but perhaps better for it to be held over the August BH weekend to give it a chance of having the same success and prestige as the Spring Fours?

Agree with the Davids; I think a "summer congress relaunch" is worth a shot, without the seniors events running alongside. (Nothing against seniors events; I just think they should be separate congresses).
I think the best schedule would …

A couple of comments on the proposed schedule -
- I think it's likely the Saturday speedball would be unviable; a shame if so, but not something the whole schedule should be built around.
- A 3.5 hour gap on the Sunday seems exc…

Agree entirely. Perhaps having a "handicap prize" would be nice though.

Disagree strongly with the idea of making all events Open. There needs to be more difference between Congress A and Congress B, not less. A mixed congress would be of interest to a lot of players. Some wouldn't consider playing it, of course, but…
