Safeguarding Policy

The EBU and EBED are committed to the care and safety of young people and adults at risk (formerly vulnerable adults). Whilst bridge is predominantly an adult pursuit there is a significant number of young people who take part in our activities. Parents and guardians are entitled to know what to expect when their children play - particularly if they attend an event unaccompanied.

The Safeguarding Policy gives full details of what to expect from anyone who is involved in running a bridge activity where young people are present. There is also guidance for issues arising concerning adults at risk. Whilst the whole document is important, the sections below warrant special attention:

•    Good and Bad Practice
•    Safeguarding Young People
•    Safeguarding Adults at Risk

Those who are planning to organise a bridge related activity or trips with young people will find Appendix A particularly useful - this gives guidelines on how to plan the activity from the initial risk assessment, through to the conclusion of the event. There are a number of useful forms which can also be used.

Any adult who supervises a child or a group of children (other than their own) in a bridge activity and has ‘regulated activity’ (four or more contacts in a period of 30 days or an overnight stay) should obtain a Disclosure and Barring Scheme (DBS) check. A trustees or manager is eligible for a DBS only if they have a particular role in managing those dealing with young people. Full details are contained in section 6 of the safeguarding policy document.
