Playing with novices and how it affects NGS grades

Membership Campaign Officer Tim Anderson has written a new blog post looking at the how playing bridge with a novice affects your NGS grade.

In the blog, Tim addresses the worries of some players that playing with a novice will negatively impact their NGS rating and explains the options clubs have for holding novice sessions.

Bell Team Wins National Point-a-Board

The National Point-a-Board Teams has been won by the team of Neil Rosen, Kieran Dyke, Mike Bell and Michael Byrne (pictured, from left to right). They finished just 1 point ahead of Alan Mould, John Holland, Sally Brock & Barry Myers, with Graham Osborne, Frances Hinden, Jeffrey Allerton & Chris Jagger in third.

The consolation final was won by Ankush Khandelwal, Ben Green, Ben Norton & Stefano Tommasini.

Gerald Haase (1950-2019)

We're sad to report the death of long time Scottish International and twice former Gold Cup winner Gerald Haase. Dr Haase was a part of the 1977 Gold Cup winning team and captained the 1982 Gold Cup winning team. More information and an obituary can be found on the Scottish Bridge Union website.

Nettleton & Gold win Lady Milne Pre-Trials

The pre-trials to represent England in the Lady Milne have been won by Diana Nettleton & Marusa Gold. They finished the 16-pair pre-trial on +131.43 IMPs, with Anne Rosen & Nevena Senior in second on +104.42 IMPs.

The top six pairs qualified for the trial, the remaining pairs to qualify were:
Third - Olivia Bailey & Elizabeth Gahan (dropped out - replaced by 7th placed pair Sandy Davies & Carole Kelly)
Fourth - Sally Brock & Gilly Cardiff
Fifth - Susanna Gross & Catherine Draper
Sixth - Dinah Caplan & Lizzie Godfrey

Those qualifying pairs will compete in the remaining stage of the trial along with Nicola Smith & Yvonne Wiseman and Heather Dhondy & Sally Anoyrkatis who were exempted from the first stage by the Selection Committee. The final stage of the trial will take place on 2nd-3rd February 2019, again at the Young Chelsea.

The Lady Milne Trophy is set to take place 12th-14th April 2019, in Ireland.

The timings for the contest are as follows:

Saturday: 10.45 - 12.55 One match of sixteen boards

  • 13.25 - 15.35 One match of sixteen boards
  • 15.55 - 18.05 One match of sixteen boards
  • 18.25 - 20.35 One match of sixteen boards

Sunday: 10.45 - 12.55 One match of 16 boards

  • 13.25 - 15.35 One match of sixteen boards
  • 15.55 - 18.05 One match of sixteen boards

2019 Camrose Trophy - 1st Weekend Results

The EBU sit atop the table after the first weekend of the Camrose Trophy, the competition between the teams of the 'home nations'.

On a tightly contested weekend in North Wales, the EBU finished 7.1 VPs ahead of the England team and 10.43 VPs ahead of hosts Wales.
