With record high temperatures, one club took to playing bridge outdoors!

Extreme temperatures have prompted a west Suffolk village bridge club to resort to extreme measures to escape the heat – by playing outdoors in the dark.

Rather than meet as normal inside Stansfield village hall at their regular Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions, members set up on the playing field outside.

When the light started to fade players produced torches, iPhones and, in one case, head lamps to provide the necessary illumination. Here is the group at 10pm. More pictures here and here.

“Playing bridge outdoors is something of a rarity, probably because there is always the danger a breeze will scatter Dummy’s card to the four winds,” Richard Evans, the club chairman, said. “Inside our village hall was stiflingly hot this week, so the relative cool of outdoors was delightful and meant we could enjoy the game. On the second evening, two members went to the trouble of providing portable outdoor lights and a gazebo with interior lighting and we played as thunder and lightning rumbled not that far away.”

Order from the Bridge Warehouse for collection at the Summer Meeting

If you are attending the Summer Meeting and would like us to take your order to Eastbourne to save on postage costs, please telephone us on 01296 397851 by midday on Wednesday 31st July.

There will be a stand with bridge gifts and books in Eastbourne but cards, stationery and bidding boxes will not be available to purchase there. The full range of stock can be seen on the Bridge Warehouse.

New EBED Product Launch

Summer is the time for carefree attitudes, music festivals and the beach. It is the also the time that EBED has launched a brand new set of products. Available to purchase from the Bridge Warehouse are Beginners Flippers, table top flippers designed to act as either a student aid or teaching aid. Each flipper covers one term of the first year of learning and are compatible with Beginning Bridge Book One. The Flippers are made of sturdy plastic coated card and are spiro bound.

They are available to purchase individually for £4.99 or £13.50 for the complete set of three.

Farewell to Bev Purvis and Ian Mitchell

In the culmination (we hope!) to a recent spate of staffing changes we have recently said goodbye to Bev Purvis who had been our Club Liaison Officer for over three years and to Ian Mitchell, who had held a variety of roles for over twenty years, including as secretary to the Laws and Ethics Committee and EBUScore support and development.

In their place we have welcomed Jonathan Lillycrop who will be our CLO as well as providing support for EBUScore, while Nick Doe will take over the secretarial role for the L&E.
