English Success in French Trials

The final stage of the French Trials were held over the last weekend (24th-26th Jan) in which the French kindly invited 6 of the top English pairs to participate to aid their selection process.

Mike Bell and Ben Norton achieved the highest score over the first six matches, whilst Ankush Khandelwal and Ben Green achieved the highest score over the final six matches and overall amongst the English delegation

Thanks to the FFB for inviting our players and organising this hugely successful event.

  • New Board Member and Vacancy

    The EBU Board is delighted to announce that it has co-opted Patrick Shields to join its number. Patrick's responsibilities will include shaping strategy. He is also Chairman of the Midland Counties Working Group, and a player of some distinction.

    The Board has a vacancy for another co-opted member, and is interested in applications from members with a current or recent IT background. Please apply with relevant CV to Gordon@ebu.co.uk before 5pm on February 14th.

    Sarah Teshome & Catherine Jagger win Lady Milne Trials Final

    The Lady Milne Trials concluded this weekend, 25th - 26th January 2020 at the West Midlands Bridge Club. The winners were Sarah Teshome & Catherine Jagger who finished on +124 IMPs. In second place were Nicola Smith & Sarah Bell with +103.80 IMPs.

    The pairs were competing to represent England in the Lady Milne Trophy - the home nations women's international championship, which will be hosted in Coventry in April. As hosts for the event this year, England are eligible to field two teams, which will be confirmed on Tuesday. The top six pairs were:

    Update: The selections have now been confirmed. The top three pairs have been selected to represent England and the pairs placed 4th to 6th have been selected to represent the EBU.

    County Green Point Weekend

    As some events were unfortunately left out of the February issue of the English Bridge magazine, we would like to let you know of some of the upcoming County events.

    Castner Team Wins National Point-a-Board

    The National Point-a-Board Teams has been won by the team of Phil King; Kevin Castner; Dessy Malakova and Stefan Skorchev (pictured, from left to right). Not pictured is Petar Ivanov, who also played for the team on the Saturday. They finished just 1 point ahead of Paul Hackett, David Mossop, John Sansom and Jason Hackett. The team of Peter Crouch, Anita Sinclair, Simon Cope and Tom Paske finished third.

    Support our Junior Squad by playing in February's Sim Pairs event

    There is still time for your club to take part in the Sim Pairs, Monday 3rd/Tuesday 4th & Wednesday 5th/Thursday 6th February. Previously titled the Bridge England Sim Pairs, this event has been re-named the "Junior Squad Sim Pairs" to celebrate and promote junior bridge in England, with funds raised from the event going directly into the junior squad budgets. The event remains in the familiar fun format, suitable for everyone to play, not just juniors!

    Brock & Brown win European Women's Trial - Stage 2

    The second stage of the European Women's trial took place over the weekend and finished yesterday at the Young Chelsea Bridge Club.

    Congratulations to the first and second placed pairs, pictured, from left Fiona Brown, Sally Brock, Sarah Bell and Nicola Smith.

    Sally Brock & Fiona Brown finished in first place with 170.68 IPMs, and Nicola Smith & Sarah Bell who finished second with 58.34 IPMs.

    Both pairs will take their place in the England team for the 2020 European Women’s Championship, to be held from the 20th to 27th June 2020, Funchal, Madeira. The EBU Selection Committee will also select a third pair to join them.

  • Junior Success at Scottish Winter Foursomes

    The Scottish Bridge Union generously invited the England Juniors to play in the Scottish Winter Fours 2020. The event is a double elimination knockout with consolation events. The England team were undefeated for the first two rounds, before losing to the eventual winners of the main event. They were then eliminated by the eventual runners up to the main event, before going on to come second in the subsidiary final. Congratulations to the team (pictured, left to right) Jonathan Clark, Ben Norton, Eshan Singhal and Kripa Panchagnula.
