The EBU Lockdown League

With an incredible 168 team entry, the new EBU Lockdown League kicked off on Monday evening, with the first of 13 rounds of 8-board matches. Teams have been seeded into 12 divisions of 14, with a 4 up/4 down promotion/relegation system. Matches are scheduled to be played on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

We wish all teams the best of luck and, above all, a fun distraction from our current lack of face-to-face bridge!

Bridge Team on Only Connect Final

This evening (Monday 30th March) on BBC2 at 8pm the team of bridge players known as 'The Suits' are taking part in the final of the challenging quiz show that is Only Connect.

Fresh from the Junior Squad, players Kyle Lam and Toby Nonnenmacher are joined by their non-bridge playing friend Isi Bogod, to form "The Suits", a team name suggested by the producers of the show in a nod to the bridge players. Hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell, the show consists of a tournament-type format in which teams compete by finding connections between seemingly unrelated clues. Tonight's match sees the team playing in the finals, against a team of Bond film enthusiasts, the 007s, including Brain of Britain 2019 finalist Frankie Fanko

For more information about the show visit BBC2 - Only Connect.

Chairman's Message - Lockdown Blues

Well, we’re not quite 100% locked down, but it feels like it. The streets are deserted, supermarkets are counting people in and out, and we’re getting used to speaking to people from six feet away. This, in time, will pass. The world we wake up to will be different from the world we know. We will have got used to a different type of behaviour, and to doing different things.

Schapiro Spring Foursomes Postponed

We are sorry to announce that due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic the decision has been made to postpone the Schapiro Spring Foursomes. We hope we may be able to run it later in the year.

British Spring Sim Pairs Cancelled

We are sorry to announce that due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic the decision has been made to cancel the British Spring Sim Pairs.

Please don’t throw away and don't open the booklets that you have already received, as we may use them at the later date. Please don't worry if our website still showing your entry.

NICKO, Hubert Phillips, Gerard Faulkner, Silver Plate, Crockfords Cup

The following arrangements have been announced in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, for the above competitions.

1. Cancellations of previously agreed match dates since the coronavirus pandemic broke will not result in matches being awarded to either side.

2. All play-by dates are being extended. When social distancing recommendations are relaxed sufficiently to enable face to face bridge to resume, new deadlines will be announced. These will give captains approximately four weeks from then to arrange matches for the current round, but with more generous than usual provisions for extensions. Subsequent rounds will have play-by dates on a slightly tighter timetable than usual to allow some catching up, but again with more generous than usual provisions for extensions.

3. Do please play online if you can. It is accepted that this is not for everyone, although it seems probable that there will be quite a lot of players playing online in the current situation who have not done so previously. Please refer to the Online Match Regulations for further information. If you are concerned about security, you can always use Skype or equivalent, so that each player has a video connection to one of his opponents at the table.

For the Crockfords Cup, along with the above arrangements, a decision will be made at a later date as to whether there is time for the two remaining knockout rounds in both Crockfords Cup and Crockfords Plate to be completed in time for the scheduled 8-team finals on 5th - 6th September, or whether the finals weekend will have to be re-scheduled.

For all of the above competitions (NICKO, Hubert Phillips, Gerard Faulkner, Silver Plate, Crockfords Cup) the entry deadline for the 2020/21 competition is being extended indefinitely. New closing dates will be announced in due course.
