Wallingford Bridge Club Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

Wallingford Bridge Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this summer. To mark the occasion, the club recently held a Swiss Pairs bridge afternoon with nearly 50 pairs turning up to play in what was a very successful day.

Lunch was provided by the Chequers pub in Roke village and 23 tables played six rounds of four boards each.

Wallingford Bridge Club started in Wallingford School library in 1969 and moved to various different venues over the years before establishing itself at the village hall in Roke where it has been located since 2001. This relationship has benefited both the club and the village with the club providing funds to fully restore the hall and add to the excellent facilities.

The club has grown significantly over the years and now has over 350 members. There are at least eight playing sessions on offer throughout the week, both day time and evenings, and these cater for all standards of player with sessions ranging from ‘friendly afternoon bridge’ with a tea break to more competitive evenings and team play. Wallingford Bridge Club has climbed to 20th on the English Bridge Union’s list of clubs based on the number of playing sessions per year.

There is also an increase in the number of lessons and seminars that are on offer and from 10th September there will be new beginner and improver classes starting on Tuesdays in both the mornings and evenings. For further information on all the lessons and seminars see the Wallingford Bridge Club website www.bridgewebs.com/wallingford or contact Joan Bennett on 01491 579795 joanmbennett@hotmail.co.uk

New members and visitors are always welcome and the annual membership is just £10 per person with each session then costing just £2.50.
