Bell & Hydes win Two Star Pairs at 70th Autumn Congress

Mike Bell and Alex Hydes (pictured left) were winners of the Two Star Pairs at the 70th Autumn Congress, which took place 17th - 19th October in Peterborough.

By winning the event Mike and Alex have taken an early lead in the Player of the Year Championship, a competition which awards points to those who finish in the top places of the EBU's most prestigious competitions.

Mike & Alex finished on 58.91% with Jackie Davies & Malcolm Pollack second on 57.26%, and Nick Boss & Richard Johnson third on 54.89%. The Satellite Pairs final was won by Nick Sandqvist & Tom Townsend (picture), and the Swiss Pairs event was won by Richard Granville & Gad Chadha (picture).

Friday afternoon saw the Really Easy Afternoon take place across three venues, with the hands being played at the main congress in Peterborough, and also at Richmond and Bradford Bridge Clubs. The event was scored across all three venues, and was won by Margaret Alder and Bob Webster (picture) with 67.21%. Tony French & Sue French were runners-up with 65.99%. Susan Norgate & Peter Buckingham were the leading pair playing at Richmond, and Janet Emmett & Hazel Greenwood were the leading pair at Bradford. Peter Jones & Christophe Nigond received the first prize for the B stratification.

The multiple teams competition on Sunday saw three finals contested. The 'premier' final, for the Eastbourne Bowl, was won by Nick Sandqvist, Tom Townsend, Janet de Botton & Artur Malinowski (picture). They finished 13 IMPs clear of the second placed team of Robert Miller, Ufuk Cotuk, Jim Deacon & Chris Wormleighton. The 'secondary' final, for the Burlington Cup, was won by Dan McIntosh, Alex Gauld, Angus Simpson & Claire Robinson (picture), and the 'consolation final', for the Sussex Cup, was won by Susanna Gross, David Gold, Catherine Seale & Tom Paske (picture).
