Alan Mayo

I was born in 1953 and will be celebrating my 65th birthday on the last day of the European Seniors Teams. I first started playing bridge in the sixth form at school and then developed my interest at Queen Mary College, London University where I participated in regular competitive games with a hard core of bridge addicts (including Seniors teammate David Muller and a former partner Geoff Hiller, sadly now deceased). I learnt a lot about the game during this period but the time spent playing instead studying meant I left university with only a Desmond (2-2).

After leaving university I started playing in EBU events and have had a number of notable successes over the years including wins in the following:
Easter Congress Pairs (1984 and 1985)
Spring Fours, Brighton and Eastbourne (1984 and 1990)
Summer Congress Teams 4 Stars (1984 and 1998)
Summer Congress Teams B Final (2017)
Spring Congress, Harrogate, Swiss Pairs (2007 and 2009)
Year End Congress Swiss Pairs (1982)
Year End Congress Swiss Teams (1989)

This year the teams I'm in are in the quarter finals of the Gold Cup and the semi finals of the Gerald Faulkner Salver (Seniors KO).

Having taken early retirement a few years ago after a career in the public sector I now have time to pursue other interests in addition to bridge, especially going to the theatre and concerts, politics, supporting West Ham United and Essex County cricket.
