The EBU has only twice had a president. When Reg Corwen stepped down, due to ill health in 1980 council decided at the following AGM that as there was no outstanding candidate to keep the post temporarily vacant, a situation which continues until today. Vice Presidents were originally elected(and then re-elected annually) by the EBU Council after the office was created in the late 1940s. They had the power to vote at Council Meetings granted to them in 1953. Now they are appointed for life but without voting rights. Council Minutes record a decision not to elect a Vice President in April 1949 for 1949/50. Vice Presidents are past servants of the EBU whose experience is considered to be of sufficient value to entitle them to attend meetings of Council (now Shareholder meetings) and of the standing committees if invited. They also act as ambassadors of the EBU.
