The first match between the House of Commons and the House of Lords was held in 1975 and was the inspiration; of Rixi Markus, the bridge correspondent of the Guardian. It was a rubber bridge championship to start with and duplicate was introduced to the match in 1991. From Rixi's death until his own in 1996 the event was sponsored by Jack Perry. Until 2014 it was then sponsored by his son, Stephen Perry of London Export. It is now sponsored by Lord Kalms, who is a regular member of the House of Lords team.
