The Under 21 Pairs started in 1982 as an under 19s event, and was an adaptation of the existing junior competition in recognition of the European Bridge League's definition of 'junior'. It was referred to as the 'Schools' event. It was renamed the 'Under 19s' in 1997. It was adjusted to an Under 21 event, to fit with the international age groupings, in 2016 The competition originally had regional qualifying rounds, prior to a final, usually held in London at Easter. The qualifying rounds were dropped in the mid-1990s with the 'final' open to all. During the early years of the competition it was sponsored by The Guardian, and the National Bank of Dubai. There was also a Schools Series which ran in the 1980s and early 1990s
