Inadequate Explanation?

The bidding starts
1D 1S Dbl*
The Dbl is (self) alerted and explained as 'My bid taken'
N declares 4S
During the play N asks 'your bid taken?'
Response 'yes'
N makes 11 tricks, but would make 12 on a 'normal' line of drawing trumps.
'Director Please!'

It seemed to me that the explanation was inadequate.
East has a thin negative dbl, so needn't have self alerted anyway.
North was unsure whether the 'taken bid' was 1H or 1S.
E interpreted the question as a request to confirm rather than elaborate!
I think this much all suggests a ruling of 12 tricks.
BUT
N did draw one round of trumps, and W followed so N knows E has at most 3 trumps.
To what extent should N have used their 'Bridge Experience'
(I can't remember the phrase that is usually used)
to realise E simply had a negative Dbl?

Comments

  • East shouldn't have alerted and had he not then apparently declarer would have made one more trick (though it would be helpful to see the full hands, neatly displayed), so should be given one more trick by way of an adjusted score.

Whether or not North might have worked it out is not so important - he shouldn't have to contend with being given misinformation.
