The EBU is sad to learn of the death of Patrick Jourdain on Thursday 28th July following a short illness.
Patrick made an enormous contribution to bridge in the UK and around the world, as both a player and journalist. He made more than seventy international appearances for Wales spanning six decades, and also played in the Camrose for Scotland on two occasions when he was working north of the border. He was a regular player at some of the EBU's biggest congresses, and enjoyed a number of successes - as recently as 2014 he won the Seniors Pairs at the Summer Meeting.
As bridge correspondent for the Daily Telegraph for nearly 25 years he was one of the leading voices in bringing bridge to the widest possible audience, whether reporting on competition results, or on news that transcended bridge's 'niche' audience - it was not unusual to see his name on the front pages. He was also the 'bridge-journalists journalist', editing the bulletin of the International Bridge Press Association for twenty years, and also serving as the organisation's President. That bridge news and results reached a worldwide audience via various media outlets owed a lot to Patrick's endeavours.
Ever the dedicated journalist, he penned his own obituary to ensure that the media would have their copy in timely fashion.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
