I was born in London on 14 October 1951 ( by coincidence the same birthday as Raymond Brock) and learnt to play bridge at Wanstead County High School. Having attended a Parents Association whist drive we were told that the following week was a bridge drive. I got a book from the library and taught three others the game. I think we came last but won at our next attempt. I went to Manchester University where I was fortune enough to play with a number of players who went on to represent their country.
I have made one previous Camrose appearance with Robert Sheehan in 1986 and believe that when I play again in January 2015 I will have set the record of the longest gap between my first and second caps. This pales into insignificance beside the gap between winning my first and second national competitions: 1974-2010
I can only say in my defence that I gave up the game for a number of years when I read for the Bar. I am still a practicing criminal barrister and between that and playing bridge I have little time for other hobbies. However now that I am in partnership with Sally Brock, both at and away from the table, I believe that further success is only just around the corner (!?)
