I didn’t start playing bridge until I was in my thirties. I make up for this deficit with good system and great partners and team mates. I’ve had some success playing with my husband Espen Erichsen. We’ve won a number of mixed events together including the European Mixed Teams in 2005. I’ve also played with Fiona Bown for more than a decade. She is a brilliant player and a great friend. There have been many high points in our partnership. Favourites include winning a bronze medal in the Women’s Pairs at the European Championships in 2023, winning the European Women’s Champions Cup in 2024 and winning a gold medal representing England in the Women’s Category at the European Teams Championships in 2026.
I care deeply about Women’s Bridge. It has given me the opportunity to excel in a competitive activity I love, at an international level, in a way that would not otherwise have been open to me. For many women, myself included, Women’s Bridge is not a symbolic category but a space where confidence, excellence, friendship and belonging are made possible.
I also care about the future. If Bridge is to survive then we all need to focus on introducing this wonderful game to a new generation of players. Every secondary school should have a Bridge club. If yours doesn’t then start one.
Bridge takes up a lot of my time. My other hobbies include gardening obsessively and writing dark psychological thrillers. Murder by Natural Causes came out in 2023. My new novel (Un)Happy Accidents is currently out on submission. I find that writing is cathartic, especially when I’ve played a hand badly at the table and I’m cross with myself. I just kill off one of my minor characters and then I feel much better.
