Maggie Knottenbelt

My parents taught me to play bridge and soon I was hooked. I played many all-night rubber bridge sessions while studying Physics at Oxford University. These turned out to be excellent practice for the all-nighters I later pulled in my career as a management consultant. While bringing up my two sons I retrained as a psychotherapist and worked at St Thomas’s Hospital for several years. Just before covid I found my way to Andrew Robson and my bridge passion was re-ignited.

I became an American National Champion at my first US Nationals in Austin in 2021 playing with Heather Dhondy. Partnering Michael Byrne we won a bronze medal at the World Open Transnationals in Marrakesh in 2023. In 2024 I represented England in the Open, Mixed and Women’s categories – winning our weekend of the Camrose, winning the Lady Milne and coming 6th in the European Championships in Herning as part of the England mixed team, thus qualifying for the Worlds. We also won the Hubert Philips Trophy.

I owe a big thank you to so many bridge players who have helped me along the way and made my bridge experience so fun and rewarding. I now live in Milan with my husband, and am checking out the Italian bridge scene.
