For the fifth day of the EBU Spring Overseas Congress, sponsored by First for Bridge, tournament Director Chris Benneworth talks about visiting the caves of Drach and the winners of the Open and IMPs Pairs:

After a rather gloomy start and some light rain, the day turned bright and sunny – ideal for sightseeing. There’s a lot to do in and around Cala Ratjada. One group of four took a taxi to the castle at Capdepera then on in to the town itself. Another group visited the caves of Drach in Porto Cristo, where a boat ride takes you through spectacular illuminated limestone caves. Another couple followed one of the walking trails north from the hotel to explore the headland overlooking the bay. Other simply relaxed in the hotel or took advantage of the heated swimming pool.

There were two sessions of bridge. In the afternoon, the open pairs was won by Rachel Thomas and Srimath Alagawatte (pictured above left) (61.21%) with Iain Watson and Rosanne Mattick close behind with just over 60%.

In the evening, the IMP Pairs was won by Mike Fithyan and Adrian Fontes (pictured above right) who had been exchanging the lead with Tanja and George Summers for much of the second half of the event. Mike and Adrian finished on 592.66, while Tanya and George ended with 529.17.

And now we are looking forward to the final two days with ten rounds of Swiss Teams to keep everyone on their toes.
