A Day in the Life...

Submitted by English Bridge Union on

In the latest instalment of the "Day in the Life" series of blog posts, EBU Communications Officer, Sam Kelly describes her typical work day:

I live locally in Aylesbury, so I have just a short commute to the office. I usually arrive in the office just before my shift starts at 8.30am.

Hopefully most of you will know me as the person who sends out emails for all EBU news and updates. As communications officer, I send a lot of emails! If you have not been receiving regular emails from me, and think you should have, please let me know sam@ebu.co.uk.

I generally start my day by checking my emails and voicemail, replying to members’ queries. Each morning I check the EBU website and update the news articles for the day. This is particularly important following competitions, to publish results and photos of the winners as soon as possible. Following competitions, I also send out emails requesting participants complete a feedback survey for us. The results from these surveys help us to plan the format of future competitions. Details from previous surveys can be found in the Competitions section of the website, Competition Feedback Results

Once prizes for events have been calculated and added to members accounts, I then send out notification emails congratulating the winners and letting them know about any prize money won.

There are always new changes happening or competitions coming up. For any new news items, I write the details or one of my colleagues will ask me to publish a news article they have written. New news articles are published on the EBU website, the EBU Bridgewebs page and social media.

I run all the EBU social media platforms, follow us to avoid missing out on the latest updates and share our posts with your friends to get them involved ( EBU Facebook EBU TwitterLinkedIn logo EBU LinkedInInstagram logo EBU Instagram).

As part of my role, I attend Editorial Board meetings and Marketing meetings. I also take minutes for any EBU Board meetings and the EBU AGM. For any meetings run online via Zoom, I will record the meetings and then transfer the recordings to the EBU YouTube channel

At least once a week, I prepare a new entry for the EBU Blog. We are always looking for new stories from clubs or counties, so please email me with details of any local events that are happening near you, big or small.

I usually finish my day at 4.30pm, and with just a short commute home, I am back before 5pm to enjoy my evening.
